💫 SADeaf’s “Hearts Can Hear” Charity Concert “聋情厚意 综艺演唱会“ will be held on 14 Oct 2023 at the Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre. It is part of SADeaf’s 68th Anniversary fundraising effort. Funds raised will be used on services aimed at improving the quality of life of SADeaf beneficiaries. Your support will enable our clients to continue receiving critical services, while helping SADeaf design further innovative & relevant programs to respond to the greater needs of the Deaf Community.

The Concert will be 2 hr physical-cum-online Variety Show, helmed by popular local Getai artistes together with Deaf performers, coming together to present an entertaining and heart-warming 68th Anniversary Charity Concert. The event is intended to achieve both the fund-raising & public education effect, aiming to create public awareness on Hearing Loss, and forge meaningful and dignified connections with the community.
The Concert will present both yesteryears’ evergreens and popular contemporary songs to appeal to audiences of all ages, delivered by well-known local artistes. There will be an intertwining of oldies and newer songs, along with performances by SADeaf’s artistes, punctuated with “Edu-tainment” messages on Hearing Loss, all woven into a smooth flowing, coherent, riveting and spectacular extravaganza!

The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) has been serving the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community for the past 68 years, helping them reach their full potential, attain a better quality of life and integrate into the mainstream society. We currently have over 3500 active beneficiaries and are proud of the thousands more we had served in the past decades.
SADeaf’s services have evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing persons. Today, our services include social and mental health support, employment support, financial assistance, counselling, education support, early childhood intervention, hearing care, Deaf awareness programme, sign-language interpretation, note-taking, sign language classes and also Singapore’s only Deafblind programme.
The services we render to our beneficiaries have been made possible by the support and generosity of kind-hearted people like you. On behalf of our beneficiaries, we thank you sincerely for being here for us all these years.

The annual Deaf Achievers Awards, organised by the Singapore Association for the Deaf, seek to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
Nominations are open from 19 June 2023 to 4 August 2023.

Selection Procedure
The nominations will be reviewed by an independent Award Vetting Panel comprising representative(s) from SADeaf, member(s) of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, reputable organisations in Singapore and ex-awardees. Shortlisted nominees may be required to attend an interview and will be informed if so. The recommendations of the Award Vetting Panel will be submitted to the Executive Council of SADeaf for approval. Once officially approved, it will be deemed final.
1. Outstanding Deaf Student
The Outstanding Deaf Student Awards recognise the achievements of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at different educational levels. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to one winner from each of the four categories as follows:
Categories
* Primary Education (Primary schools)
* Secondary Education (Secondary schools)
* Vocational Education (Training centres such as Mountbatten Vocational School)
* Post-Secondary and Tertiary Education (Junior colleges, Institutes of Technical Education, polytechnics, universities)
Criteria
* The nominee must be a registered client of SADeaf.
* The nominee must be a full-time student in a Primary School, Secondary School, Vocational Institute/Training Centre or Post-Secondary/Tertiary Institution in Singapore.
* The nominee must either show evidence of excellent academic results or shown substantial academic improvement in the previous full academic year.
* Nominees need not be a top student; a student who has shown significant improvement in academic results or shown evidence of excellent academic results will be considered. For nominees who wish to submit based on the criterion of significant improvement in academic results, please submit the previous two full academic years’ results.
* Nominations must be supported by proof of academic performance of the previous year: January to December 2022 for primary and secondary school students; or most recent or previous full academic terms for students from other educational institutions.
* Evidence of active participation in co-curricular activities, community service or proven leadership qualities will earn extra credit.
* Only one Outstanding Deaf Student Award will be conferred in each category every year.

2. Teacher of the Year
The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to any teacher or educator (including the principal of the school) who is deemed to have contributed to the academic and personal welfare of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing students during the previous full academic year.
Criteria
* Nominees must be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents.
* Only one Teacher of the Year Award will be conferred each year.
* Teachers who have previously been nominated or awarded for the Teacher of the Year Award could be re-nominated.The award vetting panel will call for an interview when two or more promising candidates are identified during the selection process.

3. Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman Award
The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning Deaf or hard-of-hearing Sportsman and Sportswoman who have distinguished performances in sporting activities during the previous full year. These can be evidenced by sports awards obtained, records and activities denoting leadership qualities or good sportsmanship.
Criteria
Nominees must be registered clients of SADeaf.
Only one Outstanding Deaf Sportsman Award and one Outstanding Deaf Sportswoman Award will be conferred each year.
* The outstanding sportsman/sportswoman must have:
– participated in sports at the constituency level, school level, national level or public competition;
– won a medal (either gold, silver, bronze or come in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd); and/or
– displayed leadership qualities (through evidence of leadership roles)
* The outstanding candidate who achieved the highest number of active participation with medals won in either one particular sport or various sports activities will qualify for the award.
* The award vetting panel will call for an interview when two or more promising candidates are identified during the selection process.

4. Special Talent
The Special Talent Award recognises a Deaf or hard-of-hearing individual who has demonstrated exceptional achievements which do not fit in any other award category. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate.
Criteria
* The nominee must be a registered client of SADeaf.
* The nominee must have attained achievements in the arts field (such as performing, visual, literary, etc arts), culinary, business, career, or any other areas, but excluding academic and sporting achievements. These should be evidenced by awards obtained, proven record of leadership, etc.
* The previous year’s awardee will not be eligible.
* Only one Outstanding Special Talent award will be given each year.

Many people believe that Sign Language is exclusively used by the Deaf, but were you aware that signs and manual communication are widely employed in various other leisure activities? In the world of scuba diving, a system of signed gestures is utilised to convey instructions, navigate, identify different species of fish, and communicate potential hazards to fellow divers. In addition to this universal code, while individuals with normal hearing may encounter difficulties conversing underwater, at considerable distances, or when separated by glass barriers, Sign Language enables the seamless exchange of information as long as there is a direct line of sight. Acquire the knowledge of Sign Language alongside your partner or friends, and open up the opportunity to engage in underwater conversations, communicate over extended distances, or converse through glass, all without the need to catch your breath!

Knowing what your doctor is saying is an important part to understanding about your personal health especially when it comes to providing informed consent before selecting and receiving treatment or undergoing surgeries. This isn’t usually an issue for most hearing persons, but for the D/deaf and hard of hearing, this could pose an ethical problem. The engagement of trained interpreters in a medical setting is important in ensuring that patients are aware of their conditions, proposed treatments and the accompanying risks, in order to make informed choices for themselves.

Assistive technology and alternative communication modes can help Deaf and hard-of-hearing students gain full access to education. Institutions like schools should provide access options such as closed captions, engaging interpreters and notetakers, and alternative learning aids.
These ensures that Deaf and hard-of-hearing students have equal access to information as well as a meaningful and rich learning experience.

The event will be held on 27 & 28 May (Sat & Sun), from 10am to 6pm.
Your cars will be washed by our supportive Corporates and SADeaf Volunteers. Food and merchandise stalls are available at our Charity Family Carnival and Entry is FREE. Carnival coupons can be purchased on-site. Our 68th Anniversary Bundles are also available, with a free car wash entitled only to the first 100 purchase of the $68 Anniversary Bundle.

Extension of SADeaf’s operating hours on Wednesdays from 5 April 2023
With effect from 5 April 2023, SADeaf’s Community Services (CS) office will extend its operating hours on Wednesdays. The new operating hours on Wednesdays will be from 8.30am to 9.30pm, except on the eves of Christmas and Lunar New Year. The office will be closed on public holidays.
With this weekday evening service, SADeaf can serve our clients better and improve accessibility for both walk-in and by-appointment services. Clients are strongly encouraged to make an appointment in advance.
