Deaf Achievers Awards 2022

The annual Deaf Achievers Awards, organised by the Singapore Association for the Deaf, seek to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Nominations are now open till Sunday, 31 July 2022.

• Outstanding Deaf Student (Primary Education) – $300
• Outstanding Deaf Student (Secondary Education) – $400
• Outstanding Deaf Student (Vocational Institute/ Training Centres) – $400
• Outstanding Deaf Student (Tertiary Education) – $500
• Special Talent – $500
• Outstanding Deaf Sportsman – $500
• Outstanding Deaf Sportswoman – $500
• Teacher of the Year – $500

Selection Procedures
The nominations will be reviewed by an independent Award Vetting Panel comprising representative(s) from SADeaf, member(s) of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, reputable organisations in Singapore and ex-awardees. The recommendations of the Award Vetting Panel will be submitted to the Executive Council of SADeaf for approval. Once officially approved, it will be deemed final.

Shortlisted nominees may be required to attend an interview and will be informed if so.
 

1. Outstanding Deaf Student
The Outstanding Deaf Student Awards recognise the achievements of deaf and hard-of-hearing students at different education levels. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning candidates from four categories: Primary Schools; Secondary Schools; Post-Secondary and Tertiary Institutions; and Vocational Institutes/Training Centres.

Secondary Education (secondary schools)
Vocational Education (Mountbatten Vocational School, etc)
Post-Secondary and Tertiary Education (Junior Colleges, Institutes of Technical Education, Polytechnics and Universities)

Criteria

• The nominee must be a registered client of SADeaf.
• The nominee must be a full-time student in a Primary School, Secondary School, Vocational Institute/Training Centre or Post-Secondary/Tertiary Institution in Singapore.
• The nominee must either show evidence of excellent academic results or shown substantial academic improvement in the previous full academic year.
• Nominees need not be a top student; a student who has shown significant improvement from the previous full academic year will be considered. For nominees who wish to submit based on this criterion, please submit the previous two full academic years’ results.
• Nominations must be supported by proof of academic performance of the previous year: January to December 2020 for primary and secondary school students; most recent or previous full academic terms for students from other educational institutions.
• Evidence of active participation in co-curricular activities, community service, and leadership qualities will earn extra credit.
• Only one “Outstanding Deaf Student Award” will be conferred in each category every year.

2. Teacher of the Year
The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to any teacher or educator (including the principal of the school) who is deemed to have contributed to the academic and personal welfare of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students during the previous full academic year.

Criteria

• Nominees must be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents.
• Only one “Teacher of the Year Award” will be conferred each year.
• Teachers who have previously been nominated or awarded for the Teacher of the Year Award can be re-nominated.
• The award vetting panel will call for an interview when two or more promising candidates are identified during the selection process.

3. Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman Award

The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning Deaf or Hard of Hearing Sportsman and Deaf Sportswoman who have distinguished performance in sports activities the previous full year. These can be evidenced by sports awards obtained, records and activities denoting leadership qualities or good sportsmanship.

Criteria

• Nominees must be registered clients of SADeaf.
• Only one “Outstanding Deaf Sportsman Award and one “Outstanding Deaf Sportswoman Award” will be conferred each year.
• The outstanding sportsman/sportswoman must have:
• – participated at constituency level sports or school level or national level or public competition.
• – Won a medal (either gold, silver, bronze or come in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd)
• – Nominee who possesses leadership qualities (through evidence of leadership roles) will be considered.
• The outstanding candidate who achieved the highest number of active participation with medals won in either one particular sport or various sports activities will qualify for the award.
• The award vetting panel will call for an interview when two or more promising candidates are identified during the selection process.

One winner from either the Outstanding Deaf Student Award, Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman Award or Special Talent Award will be invited to sit in the Award Vetting Panel the following year.

4. Special Talent
The Special Talent Award recognises a Deaf or hard-of-hearing individual who has demonstrated exceptional achievements which do not fit in any other award category. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate.

Criteria

• The nominee must be a registered client of SADeaf.
• The nominee must have attained achievements in areas such as performing  arts (performing, visual, literary, etc), culinary, business, career, or any other areas, but excluding academic and sporting achievements. These should be evidenced by awards obtained, proven record of leadership, etc.
• The previous year’s awardee will not be eligible.
• Only one “Outstanding Special Talent” award will be given each year.
