Deaf Achievers Awards 2024

The annual Deaf Achievers Awards, organised by the Singapore Association for the Deaf, seek to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Nominations are open from 24 June 2024 to 23 July 2024.

Prizes
Winners will receive a cash voucher, a plaque and a certificate.

  • Outstanding Deaf Student (Primary Education) – $300
  • Outstanding Deaf Student (Secondary Education) – $400
  • Outstanding Deaf Student (Vocational Institute/ Training Centres) – $400
  • Outstanding Deaf Student (Tertiary Education) – $500
  • Outstanding Deaf Talent – $500
  • Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman – $500
  • Educator of the Year – $500


Selection Procedure
The nominations will be reviewed by an independent Award Vetting Panel comprising representative(s) from SADeaf, member(s) of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, reputable organisations in Singapore and ex-awardees.

Shortlisted nominees may be required to attend an interview and will be informed if so. The recommendations of the Award Vetting Panel will be submitted to the Executive Council of SADeaf for approval. Once officially approved, it will be deemed final.
 


1. Outstanding Deaf Student

The Outstanding Deaf Student Awards recognise the achievements of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at different educational levels. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to one winner from each of the four categories as follows:

Categories

  • Primary Education (Primary schools)
  • Secondary Education (Secondary schools)
  • Vocational Education (Training centres such as Mountbatten Vocational School)
  • Post-Secondary and Tertiary Education (Junior colleges, Institutes of Technical Education, polytechnics, universities)

Criteria

  1. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning candidates who are from a Primary School, Secondary School, Tertiary Institution or Vocational Institute/ Training Centre in Singapore or overseas.
  2. Nominees must be a registered client of SADeaf and full-time student.
  3. Nominees need not be a top student but must have shown evidence of excellent academic results in the previous academic year. For nominees who have made substantial academic improvement in their academic results, they must submit their previous two full academic years’ results.
  4. Nominees will gain extra credit if they have shown evidence of active participation in extracurricular activities and community services and proven leadership qualities.
  5. Only one “Outstanding Deaf Student Award” will be conferred for each level each year.

2. Educator of the Year

The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to any teacher or educator who is deemed to have contributed to the academic and personal welfare of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing students during the previous full academic year.

Criteria

  1. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to any teacher or educator (including allied teachers and excluding Principals) who is deemed to have contributed to the academic and personal welfare of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students during the previous academic year. 
  2. Nominees must be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents.
  3. Only one “Educator of the Year Award” will be conferred each year.

3. Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman Award

The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning Deaf or hard-of-hearing Sportsman and Sportswoman who have distinguished performances in sporting activities during the previous full year. These can be evidenced by sports awards obtained, records and activities denoting leadership qualities or good sportsmanship.

Criteria

  1. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning Deaf or Hard of Hearing Sportsman and Sportswoman who have distinguished performance in sports activities between 1 January and 31 December 2023. 
  2. Nominees must be registered clients of SADeaf.
  3. Only one “Outstanding Deaf Sportsman Award and one “Outstanding Deaf Sportswoman Award” will be conferred each year.
  4. The outstanding sportsman/sportswoman must have:
  • participated in sports at the constituency level, school level, national level or public competition;
  • won a medal (either gold, silver, bronze or come in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd); and/or
  • displayed leadership qualities (through evidence of leadership roles).

5. The outstanding candidate who achieved the highest number of active participation with medals won in either one particular sport or various sports activities will qualify for the award.

4. Outstanding Deaf Talent Award

The Outstanding Deaf Talent Award recognizes a Deaf or hard-of-hearing individual who has demonstrated exceptional achievements which do not fit in any other award category. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate.

Criteria

  1. The award is presented in the form of a plaque together with a certificate to the winning Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual who have achieved exceptional results or attained achievements that no other Deaf has ever done between 1 January and 31 December 2023, and that he/she does not fit in any other award category.
  2. Outstanding sports and academic performances will not qualify for this category.
  3. The achievements may be in the areas of the arts (performing, visual, literary etc), culinary, business, career, and or other areas.

Note:

An awardee cannot receive the same award again within a two-year period

Achievements must occur between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023. The exceptions are the Outstanding Deaf Student and Educator of the Year Award, of which achievements must have occurred in the last academic year.

The award vetting panel will call for an interview when two or more promising candidates are identified during the selection process.

One winner from either the Outstanding Deaf Student Award, Outstanding Deaf Sportsman/Sportswoman Award or Outstanding Deaf Talent Award will be invited to sit in the Award Vetting Panel the following year.
