What is the difference between SgSL and BSC courses?

Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) Course Basic Sign Communication (BSC) Course
  • A language natural to Deaf people in Singapore
  • Visual manual mode of communication
  • Has own grammar & linguistic structure which is different from those of spoken/written language
  • Not a visual representation of spoken/written language
  • Doesn’t related grammatically to any spoken language
  • To build a vocabulary of signs for daily communications
  • Is only offered as an enriching course for English speakers
  • NOT a second language
  • Learn manual code signs in English

Can a foreigner enrol for SgSL?

Yes, you can if you can read and write in English.

If I fail the entrance exam, what would happen?

You would have to retake the test until you pass. We will inform you of the re-test date. You would only be able to proceed to the next level  if u pass the test.

When is the next entrance test for Level 2 and 3?

When you register for the Level 2, you will automatically be registered for the test. This test date will be at the end of the level.

What is the course duration for each stage?

Each stage lasts 12 weeks, consisting of two hours per week. There is about one or two-week break between each stage

How many stages are there altogether?

Right now, we have only 3 stages – Level 1, Level 2, Level 3. If you take all the stages progressively, the duration of the entire Singapore Sign Language course is about one full year.

Do I get a certificate upon my completion of the course?

Yes. You will get a certificate of attendance after you have successfully completed Level 1 within 75% and above of your attendance. For Level 2, you will get result slip. For Level 3, a certificate of achievement will be awarded with result slip.

What if I fail the test/exam?

If you fail the test/exam, you could re-take it a few weeks later. If you fail in your second attempt, you would have to repeat the course.

Are there tests/exams after each level?

Yes, At the end of Level 2 and Level 3. There will be no test for Level 1.

If I missed the Singapore Sign Language Course class this time round, when will the next class be?

We conduct new classes every three months. Example: The next intake will be in September if you have missed registering in June.
